Oudtshoorn

Oudtshoorn is a town in the Western Cape province in South Africa and is the largest town in the Little Karoo region. The town is home to the world's largest Ostrich population with a number of specialized ostrich breeding farms.

The area in which Oudtshoorn is situated was originally inhabited by the Bushmen, as evidenced by the many rock paintings that are found in caves throughout the surrounding Swartberg mountains.

Ostrich Farms

The main reason for the large rise in prosperity of Oudtshoorn was the ostrich, whose feathers had become extremely popular as fashion accessories in Europe; they were especially popular for use on hats. Come experience the breeding of ostriches on farms which are open to visitors providing specialized information about the various stages of the birds’ development, provided with the opportunity to visit young offspring and an ostrich pen.

The Cango Caves are located in Precambrian limestones at the foothills of the Swartberg range near the town of Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The principal cave is one of the country's finest, best known and most popular tourist caves and attracts many visitors.

The "Adventure Tour" consists of crawling through narrow passages and climbing up steep rock formations guided by small lights. The caves contain spectacular halls and grand limestone formations as well as some rather small passages on the Adventure Tour. The smallest passage that tourists will have to pass through on the Adventure Tour is just under 30 cm high at the exit.
